What Is Tamsulosin?

Tamsulosin belongs to a group of medicines called alpha-blockers. It is effective in treating men with an enlarged prostate (benign prostate enlargement). Occasionally this drug is taken to treat kidney stones. It works by relaxing prostate and bladder muscles so urine can flow easily.

How Does Tamsulosin Work?

Tamsulosin enables the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck to relax. This creates control and makes it easier when going for a wee.� Tamsulosin relieves symptoms of BPH such as difficulty in beginning the flow of urine, painful urination, weak stream, and urinating often or urgently.

Tamsulosin Warnings

  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Tamsulosin or sulfa medications.
  • Tamsulosin is not suitable for you if you have ever had prostate cancer or liver or kidney disease.
  • Avoid Tamsulosin when having surgery, including dental or eye surgery.
  • Tamsulosin may cause dizziness, especially when you get up too fast after taking it. Be careful if driving or using heavy machinery.

Directions for Use

  • Tamsulosin is an oral drug usually taken once a day, 30 minutes after the same meal each day.
  • Swallow the Tamsulosin capsules whole; do not split, chew, crush, or open them.
  • Tamsulosin may help control your condition, but it will not cure it. Continue to take the medicine even if you feel well.

Tamsulosin Ingredients

Each Tamsulosin tablet contains the active ingredient tamsulosin HCl 0.4 mg. The drug comprises the following inactive ingredients: methacrylic acid copolymer, microcrystalline cellulose, triacetin, polysorbate 80, sodium lauryl sulfate, calcium stearate, talc, FD&C blue no.

Side Effects

Side Effects of Tamsulosin

Tamsulosin may cause some side effects. They include:

  • Sleep disorder.
  • Weakness, back pain, and diarrhoea.
  • Runny or stuffy nose.
  • Pain or pressure in the face.
  • Sore throat, cough, fever, chills.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Difficulty ejaculating.

Some side effects can be severe. Call the doctor immediately you experience:

  • Painful erection of the penis that lasts for hours
  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Hives
