What Is Mebeverine, and What Is It Used For?

Mebeverine is a generic brand of antispasmodic IBS treatment sold as Colofac. The drug is used to treat symptoms of intestinal complaints and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).�� Mebeverine should be taken about 20 minutes before a meal to relieve painful spasms, diarrhoea, flatulence, bloating, and constipation that come from IBS.� The treatment is recommended for patients above 18 years.

How Does Mebeverine Work?

Mebeverine contains the active ingredient mebeverine, which is a relaxant. The drug is categorized as an antispasmodic medicine. It works by relieving cramping that causes stomach pain and bowel spasms.� Mebeverine relaxes the muscles in your intestine. This reduces the cramps and discomfort that IBS can cause. In return, it reduces the bloating, pain and discomfort on the lower abdomen.

  • Have kidney or liver problems.
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Directions

Mebeverine Directions and Dosage

Take one tablet of Mebeverine up to three times a day. Swallow each tablet with plenty of water and do not chew. Only take Mebeverine when symptoms flare up and stop taking it when they subside, or as prescribed by your GP. If your symptoms have not improved after two weeks, or if they get worse, you should stop using Mebeverine and contact your doctor.

The active ingredient in Mebeverine tablets is Mebeverine hydrochloride 135mg. Mebeverine also contains the inactive ingredients lactose monohydrate, cellulose, microcrystalline, povidone, sodium starch glycolate, talc, magnesium stearate, purified water, opadry white, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (e464), titanium dioxide (e171), and polyethylene glycol.

Side Effects of Mebeverine

Not everyone will experience side effects when they take Mebeverine. However if you do, they may include:

  • Dry mouth.
  • Heartburn.
Mebeverine may make you prone to skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders like:
  • Urticaria
  • Angioedema
  • Face oedema
  • Exanthema
