Description

What is ellaOne?

ellaOne is an emergency contraceptive pill containing the active ingredient ulipristal acetate. It is designed to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or if a contraceptive method has failed (e.g., condom split). It is effective for up to 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected sex, though it is advised to take it as soon as possible for maximum efficacy.

How Does ellaOne Work?

The active ingredient in ellaOne, ulipristal acetate, works by delaying or preventing ovulation. By doing so, it ensures that no egg is released to be fertilised by sperm, thereby preventing pregnancy. ellaOne does not provide protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Warnings

  • Ella one should only be used as an emergency pill and should not replace your regular contraceptive method.
  • If you are sick or suffer from diarrhoea within 3 hours of taking Ella One, it may not have been absorbed and will not be effective. You will need to obtain another supply as soon as possible.
  • Ella One may cause your next period to come earlier, or to be more delayed than expected, and it may be heavier or lighter than usual.
  • Emergency contraception will not protect you for the rest of your cycle.
  • Discuss the use of Ella one with your doctor in case you are on any other medication.
  • If your period is already late, you could be pregnant. Visit your fertility clinic before taking Ella One.
