Canesten Pessaries are used to treat vaginal thrush (candidiasis). Thrush is caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans in the vagina, leading to symptoms like itching, burning, and discharge. The pessaries work by delivering the antifungal agent clotrimazole directly to the source of the infection to eliminate the fungus and provide symptom relief.

What is Canesten Pessaries?

Canesten Pessaries are used to treat vaginal thrush (candidiasis). Thrush is caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans in the vagina, leading to symptoms like itching, burning, and discharge. 

The pessaries are available in different strengths to suit various treatment needs. The 500mg pessary is a single-dose treatment, while the 200mg pessaries are used over three consecutive nights, and the 100mg pessaries are used for six consecutive nights. They can be used alongside external creams to provide additional relief from itching and irritation around the vulva.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

How Do Canesten Pessaries Work?

Canesten Pessaries contain clotrimazole, an antifungal agent that works by disrupting the cell membranes of the fungi, thereby killing them and clearing the infection. These pessaries are inserted high into the vagina using the provided applicator, allowing the medication to target the infection directly. This treatment is typically effective within a few days, although some women may need to use the pessaries for up to seven days to see full results.

They are commonly used to treat vaginal thrush, candidiasis, yeast infections, and urinary tract infections.

  • Inform your doctor of any prescription medication you are using.
  • Inform your doctor of your pregnancy or breastfeeding status.
  • Do not use Canesten pessaries if you have a history of vaginal bleeding.
  • Stop using Canesten pessaries if you experience adverse side effects and consult your doctor.
  • Do not engage in unprotected sexual activities when using Canesten pessaries.

Directions

It is important to follow the instructions of your healthcare provider when using Canesten pessaries or read the instructions provided on the package leaflet when self-medicating.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly and move the pessary from its packaging.
  • Insert the pointed end of the pessary into the vagina, using your fingers to push it up against the cervix as far as possible.
  • Leave the pessary in place for at least six hours, or as directed by your doctor.
  • Remove the pessary by hooking your finger under the rim and pulling it out gently.
  • Throw the pessary away in a bin, and not down the toilet.

Ingredients

clotrimazole, llactose monohydrate, Calcium lactate, magnesium stearate, lactic acid, pentahydrate, among others.

Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Irritation or burning
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Headache

More severe side effects can include 

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Itching or swelling at the area under medication
