What is Bactroban 2% Ointment?

Bactroban is an antibiotic medication that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the prevention of bacterial growth on the skin. It can be used to treat different types of skin infections.

How Does Bactroban Work?

The skin is the largest organ in the body that protects other organs from danger, infections, and uncomfortable environmental temperature changes. However, the skin can sometimes get infected with mild, or serious life-threatening infections. Bacterial skin infections develop when the germs enter the body through wounds, blisters or weakened hair follicles. The infections can then display different symptoms depending on a person's age, the type of bacteria or even where it is located in the body. Bactroban works by stopping the growth of these bacteria, inhibiting their ability to reproduce, killing them and relieving the body of any symptoms.

It is commonly used to treat boils, impetigo, cellulitis, and infected hair follicles, as well as cuts, wounds and blisters on the skin.

Warnings

  • Inform your doctor of any past or present prescription medication you are using.

  • Inform your doctor of any allergic symptoms you have.
  • Do not share your medication with others even if they have similar symptoms.
  • Do not use this medication on children below five years without your doctor's approval.
  • Store the medication far from reach by pets and children.
  • If symptoms persist, seek medical intervention

Directions

Bactroban ointment is only for external use and should not be ingested or placed into contact with eyes, wounded or blistered skin.

Follow the instructions given by your doctor, or read the information provided on the package label when self-medicating:

  • Rinse with water thoroughly if it gets in.
  • Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before and after using Bactroban.
  • Clean and dry the affected area before applying the ointment and rub gently until it clears.
  • Do not spread Bactroban to uninfected parts.
  • Use if for the recommended duration for maximum results.
  • After applying the ointment, use a sterile gauze pad that allows air to circulate the treated skin.

Ingredients

Mupirocin Calcium, benzyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, cetomacrogol 1000, mineral oil, xanthan gum, cetyl alcohol, phenoxyethanol, and purified water.

Side Effects

Side effects can include:

  • Burning sensation on the skin
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Watery or bloody diarrhoea
  • Unusual skin peeling or blistering
  • Redness or itchiness around the treating area

You may also experience severe allergic reactions, such as swelling of the face, lips, or throat, and difficulty breathing.
