Description

Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that fights bacterial infections by stopping the bacteria from reproducing. Its long half-life allows it to remain in the body longer, making treatment courses shorter. This medication is generally used as a second-line treatment if first-line antibiotics like doxycycline have not worked. It is effective for conditions like chlamydia, urethritis, and certain respiratory infections.

The Azithromycin 250 mg tablet is taken for three days and clears up the infection within seven days. Administering the antibiotic stops the burning pain while urinating. The doctor may require a test, usually a urine or swab test, to confirm Chlamydia before treatment.

Warnings

The prescription of Azithromycin is not suitable for Chlamydia patients who suffer from:

  • Severe liver, heart, or kidney problems.
  • Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood.
  • Muscle weakness called myasthenia gravis.
  • Migraines, and are taking any ergot derivatives.
  • Neurological or psychiatric problems.

Seek medical attention immediately if you notice bleeding after sex or thick bloody vaginal discharge, which could indicate another serious condition.

The standard dose for chlamydia is 1,000mg taken as a single dose.

For other infections, it may be taken as 500mg once daily for 3 to 5 days, depending on the condition.

  • Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food.
  • Do not crush or chew the tablet.
  • Dosage depends upon the ailment.
