llopurinol is primarily used to lower uric acid levels in the blood and is commonly prescribed to prevent gout attacks and treat kidney stones. It works by reducing the production of uric acid, thereby preventing the formation of uric acid crystals in joints that lead to gout symptoms. It is also sometimes prescribed to reduce uric acid levels in patients undergoing certain cancer treatments
Every day the human body naturally produces uric acid during the breakdown of chemicals known as purines that are found in certain food and drink substances. The by-product then dissolves in the blood and exits the body through urine. However, there are instances when the body produces too much uric acid for the kidneys to handle. As a result, the uric acid forms crystals that accumulate in joints causing gout, a form of inflammatory arthritis that is extremely painful. Allopurinol belongs to a group of medications known as Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitors that work by blocking the Xanthine Oxidase enzyme that is responsible for the production of uric acid. lowering the levels of uric acid in the urine and bloodstream. Elevated uric acid can lead to gout, where sharp uric acid crystals form around the joints, causing pain and inflammation. Regular use of allopurinol can reduce the frequency of gout attacks and prevent joint damage
Allopurinol is taken orally, usually once a day, ideally after food to minimize side effects such as nausea. If on a high dose, your doctor may recommend splitting the dose and taking it twice a day. It is important to drink plenty of fluids (2 to 3 liters daily) while on this medication. The starting dose is often 100mg daily, which may be adjusted based on uric acid levels monitored by blood tests. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one
