Warts, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), are small, rough growths on the skin. They mostly appear on the hands but can grow on any part of the body, while Verrucas (a type of wart) occur on the soles of the feet. They are spread through direct contact with the virus, either skin-to-skin or in communal areas like swimming pools and showers. Warts are not harmful, but some people find them itchy, painful or embarrassing. Verrucas are more likely to be painful. Over-the-counter salicylic acid preparations, cryotherapy, and sometimes laser treatment or surgical removal can be used to treat warts and verrucas. Preventing warts involves avoiding direct contact with warts on others and maintaining good foot hygiene.
