Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can cause difficulties in falling or staying asleep, leading to daytime fatigue and impaired function. Those who have insomnia often feel tired when waking up and can struggle to nap during the day. Causes include stress, anxiety, medical conditions, and poor sleep habits, while alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, and illegal drugs can exacerbate it. Insomnia that lasts 3 months or longer is called long-term insomnia. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT-I), lifestyle changes, and sometimes medications to promote sleep are used to combat the disorder.
