Ear wax, or cerumen, is a normal substance produced by glands in the ear canal to lubricate the ear and protect it from irritants. Although it usually falls out of the ears naturally, it can build up, resulting in an excess and blocked ears. This can cause discomfort, hearing loss, a ringing in the ears, vertigo, and infections. Stress, ear shape, genetics and the regular use of earbuds or hearing aids can cause ear wax build up. Gentle cleaning, over-the-counter drops, or professional removal in severe cases can be used to treat excess ear wax.
