Gonorrhoea is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can occur in both men and women and affects the urethra, cervix, rectum and/or throat. Gonorrhoea is most commonly spread during vaginal, oral or anal sex. It presents with symptoms such as painful urination and discharge, swelling at the opening of the penis, discomfort during intercourse, fever, and a persistent sore throat, but many cases are asymptomatic. Antibiotic treatment is effective, but increasing antibiotic resistance is a concern. Regular screening and safe sex practices are essential.
